Attacks against refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants are wide-spread and are increasing across South Africa. Since the well-publicised xenophobic violence in May 2008, deaths, destruction of property and displacements of non-nationals continue at alarming levels and are generally underreported.

In 2011, at least 99 non-nationals were murdered and at least 100 were seriously injured (30 of whom were permanently paralysed by bullets) in what appears to be prejudice motivated attacks. Between May and July 2012, numerous incidents of destruction and/or looting of shops/homes and displacement of refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants have been reported and documented in seven provinces - Gauteng, Free State, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga; In July and August 2012, at least 600 shops operated by non-nationals were forcibly closed and the stock removed in Limpopo Province.

Since March 2015 we can clear talk about an XENOPHIBIA OUTBREAK in SA. And we go harder as we know that official Police Officers are standing with a smile and watching when people get brutal slaughtered and be burned in publicly.

South Africa, at all levels of government, is obliged to protect and to uphold the rights of every person present in the country, regardless of their nationality or citizenship status. These include the rights of every person, including migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers, “to be free from all forms of violence from either public or private sources” and to have equal protection of the law.

Add your signature to this petition to urge the President not to overlook the rights guaranteed to refugees and migrants and to take action that sends a message that intolerance and prejudice of any kind will not be accepted in South Africa.

Raison

Your Excellency, I am deeply concerned with the ongoing and alarming levels of prejudice-motivated violence against asylum-seekers, refugees and migrants in South Africa. I urge you not to overlook the rights guaranteed to refugees and migrants by the South African Constitution and international law and to take action that sends a message that intolerance and prejudice of any kind will not be accepted in South Africa.

Your Excellency, I urge you to take the following action:

  1. Publicly condemn, in the strongest possible terms, targeted violence against migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers, including the destruction of their property and livelihood.

  2. Take all necessary measures to ensure that the government provides an environment in which every person in South Africa, including non-nationals, can live their lives without fear of discrimination, harassment or violence.

  3. Take all appropriate measures to bring those responsible for prejudice-motivated attacks to justice.
