The Austrian Academy of Sciences and the projects it supports are, quite simply, national treasures. Some have been in existence and thriving for over a century. Scholars in different fields will have different projects to single out, but, as a classicist and medievalist with a strong interest in patristics, I am particularly concerned about the Kirchenväterkommission (CSEL), the Institut für Mittelalterforschung, the Kommission für antike Literatur und lateinische Tradition, and the Kommission für antike Rechtsgeschichte. The Academy has been supporting small groups of irreplaceable world experts as well as training the new generation of experts who will keep many endangered areas of the Humanities and Social Sciences alive during the coming hard times. Their numbers are few and, particularly for that reason, to eliminate them would be (however unintentionally) cultural vandalism with long-lasting effects. When scholarship and scholars are disrupted and uprooted, it is very hard or impossible to restore the lost status quo. The Austrian government should continue to support its legendary projects in the ancient and medieval Humanities and Social Sciences.
