Now it is done: on January 15, 2025, we submitted the collected signatures under our appeal “For the use of truly social media” to the German Rectors' Conference. Representatives of the supporting organizations Teckids, Topio and Wikimedia Germany were also present (photo). The increasing use of Mastodon and the withdrawal of universities from X in the last few days show that the appeal is having an effect. With the Robert Koch Institute, the Leibniz Association and the German Research Foundation, important scientific institutes and organizations have joined the eXit, and more will follow.
Even the first federal ministries are implementing the withdrawal from X, and in France and Spain, civil society is striving for a comprehensive withdrawal from the platform, www.helloquitx.com/.
After the election of the new US president, it is now being recognized in many places that with Mastodon and the Fediverse, we have important tools at hand to implement Europe's digital sovereignty. So please help to convince universities and other institutions that still stand aside to join Mastodon.
Together we have already come a long way. We have the chance not only to hope for truly social media, but to make it a reality.
