In December 2016, we had the opportunity to preset our petition to both adressees, the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior and State Secretary Mr. Gerhard Eck, and the Mayor of the City of Munich, Ms. Christine Strobl, as the owner of the regatta venue.

Both parties reassured us that the discussions will continue and that solutions are considered that will enable a thoughtful and reasonable renovation of the venue. The petition will be taken to the Munich City Council towards the end of 2017.

Both meetings took place in a friendly and positive atmosphere, but we nevertheless need to continue our cause for the modernization of the venue. We only reached one milestone on our journey.

On December 12, 2016 Regatta München e.V. will be finally delivering the 16,117 collected signatures to the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior, for Building and Transport, which is responsible for sports in our state.

A delegation of different stakeholders, who signed the petition, will deliver the signatures to Permanent State Secretary Gerhard Eck to ask for support to maintain this unique Bavarian regatta and event site and the historic heritage of the XXth Summer Olympic Games of 1972.

The delegation will consist of:
• Isabell Feldmann of Rudergesellschaft München 1972, Bavarian champion rower 2015, representing the youth
• Thomas Stamm, President of the Bavarian Rowing Association, representing the supporting sports associations
• Hans-Johann Färber, 1972 Olympic Gold medallist, 4+, who won this historic medal at the Olympic regatta course, and 1976 Olympic Bronze medallist in Montreal, representing the active athletes of 1972 and a former employee at the regatta centre
• Oliver Bettzieche, President of Regatta München e.V. and petition initiator

“We are looking forward to delivering the numerous signatures from the metropolitan region of Munich, the State of Bavaria, all of Germany and the world”, says Oliver Bettzieche, President, Regatta München e.V. “The regatta course is a multi-use event location and sports events in rowing and canoe sprint would not be possible in Bavaria and southern Germany. But the venue is also an important factor for the surrounding communities and their hotels, restaurants, and retail shops. A forward looking, at-scale renovation that ensures future regattas is therefore crucial for many different stakeholder groups.”

The City of Munich is also willing to accept the signatures and is currently looking for a suitable date for the delivery.

The text was proofed and linguistically amended, the content itself remains unchanged.

Neuer Petitionstext: On December 2, 2015 the 2015, Munich City Council of the City of Munich partly committed itself to the Munich Olympic Regatta Centre in Oberschleißheim. Oberschleissheim. But they also decided to check two alternative usage concepts that endangers endanger the survival of one of the most appreciated, fairest, fairest and busiest regatta courses worldwide. These two alternatives explicitly exclude the hosting of national and/or international events.
We therefore ask the City Council of the City of Munich and the government of the Free State of Bavaria:
1. to commit themselves to the heritage of the 1972 Olympic Games,
2. to honour the hitherto exemplary sustainable usage of the regatta centre, and
3. to further support the centre in a financially adequate manner equally manner, both as a venue for national and international rowing and canoe sprint regattas regatta as well as maintaining it as a training centre for rowers and canoeists, as a recreational site for nature lovers and walkers, and as sports complex an amenity for all the other sports like cycling, running, triathlon, beach volleyball, beach soccer, inline skating, and many more, which have found an official or even unofficial home here.
Please sign our petition and strengthen the centre and the non-profit organisations here onsite! United we can convince the authorities that a regatta centre without regattas is simply weird and does not make any sense at all. a pointless contradiction in terms. We will forward all your votes at the end of the season to the City Council of the City of Munich and the Bavarian government.

Neue Begründung: The regatta centre was initially planned perfectly in the late 1960ies as a perfect venue for the 1972 Olympic Games in the late 1960ies. The efforts were tremendous and Games. Oberschleissheim was chosen due to the proximity to the city and the ideal location for a post-Olympic usage. A special effort was made to fit the architecture harmonically harmoniously into the landscape of Dachauer Moos – today an extensive nature reserve. The centre is owned by the City of Munich, which took over the buildings of the 1972 Olympic Games, responsible for the administration Games and is the administered by Olympiapark München GmbH.
The rowing and canoe sprint events at the Olympic Games were a tremendous success and quite popular. success. The grandstand was built for the vast an incredible number of 25,000 spectators. 1973, the centre’s architect was honoured with the Grand Prize of the German Architects Association.
In the following years, the centre became one of the busiest regatta courses worldwide and up to date is a great sample for the sustainability of the 1972 buildings, just starting to show its age. World Rowing Championships were held in 1981 and 2007, the World Rowing Junior Championships in 1994, the 1998 World Rowing Masters Regatta, and World Rowing Cups from 1997 until 2012 plus additionally German Championships in rowing and canoe sprint.
Apart from the core sports rowing and canoe sprint, additional sports like triathlon, running, long-distance swimming, inline skating, and many others call it their home. Several years ago, a beach volleyball and beach soccer centre was added. National teams of different sports – from New Zealand and China to France and Great Britain – used this sport complex sports venue to train for important competitions.
Sportswomen and sportsmen worldwide know the centre and appreciate it for the its ideal and fair conditions. Munich citizens and visitors from surrounding towns love the unique atmosphere that the centre passes on with its rowers and canoeists on the course in midst the beautiful landscape passes on. landscape. Road bikers and triathletes, inline skaters, and other sports enthusiasts train here peacefully together with the core sports.
Germany only has five other regatta courses, which host big international regattas. In all of southern Germany, this is the only regatta centre.
The centre needs renovation in order to make it accessible and environmentally friendly, and at the same time to fulfil modern safety regulations. The 2.3 km long regatta course itself is in perfect condition and every rower and canoeist loves to visit Munich and to train and compete here in this unique clear blue Munich water.
We don’t ask for a luxury renovation. We only ask for the opportunity to use the regatta centre successfully as a regatta centre parallel to its use for other sportswomen and sportsmen from other sports. Not more. After a few years without clear vision it is high noon now that the City Council and the state government clearly commit themselves to this regatta centre and to show action by deciding on a reasonable and modern renovation concept that appropriately considers the centre’s unique character.
