Atefeh Chaharmahalian, the poet and former head of the Iranian Writers' Union, was arrested by security forces in Tehran on October 3, 2022 and is being held in Ward 209 of the notorious Evin Prison.
The signatories to this appeal condemn all state repression against demonstrating citizens in Iran who are being held solely for exercising the human right to freedom of expression, like Atefeh Chaharmahalian. The undersigned declare their solidarity with the citizens who are currently fighting for human rights such as freedom of expression in Iran. We demand respect for human rights, compliance with the rule of law, information about Atefeh Chaharmahalian and the immediate release of the poet and activist.

Atefeh Chaharmahalian was born in 1981 in the province of Khuzestan, in southwestern Iran. Her first collection of poems was published in 2000 under the title "Mashughe Kaghazi". She was on the board of directors of the Iranian Writers' Association and has been helping children and adults in need for years, whether in the provinces of Sistan, Baluchistan, Kurdistan or in the Darvazeh Ghar, "Cave Gate" district of Tehran. She is one of the most important poets of the post-revolutionary era and one of Iran's most courageous writers fighting for freedom of expression.
