Petition is addressed to: German Bundestag

We call on Germany to place an embargo on Russian gas, oil, and coal supplies.
Today, Germany gets over 50 percent of its gas and 36 percent of its oil from Russia. Sixty percent of the coal used in power plants last year also came from this country.
As a result, Germany is Russia's largest energy customer and is particularly dependent on its supplies. That is one of the reasons why the sanctions imposed by the EU exclude the energy business with Russia.
Russia increased its military spending up to $61.7 billion in 2020, yet EU countries pay Russia $67 billion for gas, oil, and coal each year. Putin's regime needs massive funds to continue the war against Ukraine. Thus the revenues from gas, oil, and coal are indirectly financing the missiles that the Russian army shoots over civilians in Ukraine.
Therefore, when German households pay their gas and electricity bills, part of them ends up in Putin's war chest.
Germany is deeply affected by the Russian war in Ukraine, although it continues to finance it. Fortunately, this dependence is two-sided: Germany has actual control over the Russian war budget!
As the Verein der Kohleimporteure e.V. (Coal Importers Association) reports, coal supplies can be fully replaced by other countries within a few months. Still, even when gas and oil remain problematic, an embargo is feasible.
That will mean higher prices, but human lives are still far more valuable.
The United Nations has said that, as of March 2, more than 200 civilians have died and hundreds more have been wounded; Ukraine’s emergency services puts the civilian death toll at 2,000 people as of March 2.
Delays in halting imports of Russian gas, oil, and coal are adding to the war budget and costing hundreds of Ukrainian lives every day.
Germany has the power to stop the war and must not ignore it.
