'The moment he put down his crutches'

Begründung

Park Kyeong-su (40), captain of professional baseball team KT Wiz, is retiring after 22 years as a professional player.

Park Kyung-soo said, "Today is the day I end my career as a player that has lasted over 30 years," after his team lost 1-4 to the LG Twins in the 5th game of the 2024 Professional Baseball Playoffs held at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul on the 11th, and added, "I am overwhelmed with emotions. Now, I will begin my second life."

He said, "I'm sorry and thankful to the KT players," and "I loved KT more than anyone else and hoped our team would do well. I will continue to cheer for KT in the future."

Park Gyeong-su, who graduated from Seongnam High School, debuted in professional baseball after being selected by LG in the 2003 rookie draft.

Park Gyeong-su played as LG's starting infielder until he transferred to the new team KT as a free agent in November 2014.

Park Kyung-soo took the lead in cultivating the soil of the youngest team, KT.

He played a major role in helping KT settle into the KBO League by leading the younger players on and off the field.

Sometimes as a mood maker, and sometimes as a strict senior, he created KT's team culture.

He played harder than anyone else on the field and became a role model for his juniors.

In the 2021 Korean Series (KS) against the Doosan Bears, he led the team to its first championship since its founding by displaying several flying saves.

At that time, Park Kyung-soo suffered a ruptured calf muscle during the defense of the 3rd game of the KS, but he came out on crutches and encouraged his juniors from behind, leaving a deep impression.

After confirming the championship in the 4th game of the 2021 KS, the scene where Park Kyung-soo, who was in the dugout, came out onto the field on crutches, supported by the team's most senior player, Yoo Han-jun (current kt coach), remains the most shining moment in the team's history.

Park Kyung-soo was the team's focal point in this year's postseason as well.

Park Kyung-soo, who had planned to retire early, did not enter the post-season entry list despite the advice of KT manager Lee Kang-cheol, and focused only on helping his juniors train before and after games.

Park Kyung-soo had a huge impact on the team and was the driving force behind KT's victory in the tiebreaker and wild card match.

Unfortunately, Park Kyung-soo ended his journey as a player on October 11th.

Park Kyung-soo said, "I started my professional career at Jamsil Stadium, and I will end it there as well," and added, "To be honest, it doesn't feel real (that I am retiring). I had a lot to say to my juniors after the game, but I just said goodbye to them by saying thank you for your hard work."

He added, "I experienced fall baseball for the first time wearing a KT uniform, and I grew a lot at KT." He added, "I don't have any set plans for the future, but I think there will be another role. I will take my time and prepare for my second life.
