Petition is addressed to: Petitionsausschuss des Landtages Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

For successful studies and an attractive study location (in) M-V, we urgently need more support for our Studierendenwerke from the state government!

Therefore we demand ...

  1. the reversal of cuts and the securing of subsidies! We need a restoration but also an increase in the state goverment's subsidies for the Studierendenwerke as soon as possible! Cost-cutting measures are unacceptable. We demand compensation for the funding cut for the missing coronavirus grants in 2024 and 2025. There must be no further reduction in the state goverment's grants! Instead, they must be increased to compensate for the ongoing consequences of the coronavirus pandemic and the energy crisis and to offset the significant cost increases.
  2. securing the canteens! Every canteen currently in operation has a right to exist and cannot be compensated for. We demand that the state government makes a clear commitment to securing the locations of the canteens in M-V. The closure or restriction of canteens, especially at smaller university locations, must be avoided as a matter of urgency! Support for students in form of subsidized food and drink prices must remain guaranteed across all locations!
  3. affordable housing for students. The provision of affordable and appropriate housing is a central task of the Studierendenwerke that must be guaranteed. This does not require savings, but investment. This includes the construction of new accommodation as well as the maintenance and refurbishment of existing accommodation and general accommodation for students. Without sustainable funding, the financial burden for students will continue to increase and reduce the attractiveness of MV as a place to study.
  4. securing social and psychological counseling. Social and psychological counseling is essential for many students. The need for psychological and social counseling has increased considerably. The Studierendenwerke must be in a position to provide this essential support. Cuts in this area are absolutely unacceptable and must be reversed.
  5. Long-term predictability! In addition to sufficient subsidies, the Studierendenwerke need more planning security! Financial resources provided, such as grants, must be determined and communicated as early as possible. Development opportunities for 2026 must not be determined in the middle or end of 2025! Only a good and early involvement of all stakeholders can lead to the best possible result!
  6. affordable studies! Further major price increases in semester fees or services offered by the student unions must be avoided at all costs! The study location M-V must remain affordable and attractive for all students. The semester fee is a solidarity contribution by students. The principle of solidarity must not be jeopardized by disproportionately high semester fees. In addition, semester fees must remain affordable for all students.

Reason

The services provided by the Studierendenwerke are a central pillar of studying in M-V. From accommodation and canteens to social, BAföG and psychological counseling, they are indispensable. Unfortunately, it has recently become clear how problematic their situation really is. Announced and in some cases already implemented cost-cutting measures such as canteen closures, restrictions in opening hours, price increases and the loss of counseling services, despite constantly rising semester fees, illustrate the situation and make it clear: Our Studierendenwerke in M-V are still dependent on subsidies! But it's not just the financial cuts that pose a challenge; the consequences of past, but lingering crises such as the corona pandemic are also still being felt. Students have an increased need for psychological and social counseling, but the financial scope has also continued to shrink.

The state government must also understand that underfunding our Studierendenwerke means a considerable reduction in the attractiveness of M-V as a business and study location. It cannot and must not be in the interests of politics to risk an even greater shortage of well-trained specialists such as teachers in our state due to falling student numbers. Swift action by the state government is essential in order to prevent further cuts to our Studierendenwerke.

Thank you for your support, AStA der Universität Rostock from Rostock
