Abbott: Let us be in charge of our own diabetes data!

Millions of people with diabetes wear a FreeStyle Libre sensor on their body every day. Many of us do not rely solely on the official Abbott app, but also on an entire ecosystem of free and open-source applications that address gaps Abbott has not officially covered to this day: smartwatch displays, more reliable alerts, automated insulin delivery (loop systems), or the ability for parents to monitor their children’s glucose levels while they are at school.
According to current information, Abbott is planning technical changes to the data interface (LibreLinkUp API) that could result in exactly these third-party apps no longer working. This does not only affect technology enthusiasts — it particularly affects vulnerable groups:

• Children with type 1 diabetes, whose parents depend on reliable remote monitoring.
• People with impaired hypoglycemia awareness, for whom every additional alarm option can be potentially life-saving.
• People who cannot afford additional paid devices or subscriptions and therefore rely on free, community-developed projects created by volunteers.

Data security is important — but it can also be ensured through an open, documented, and secure interface, as other manufacturers have demonstrated. This petition is intended to send Abbott a clear and visible message: A broad and committed community is paying close attention and expects its freedom of choice regarding its own health data to be preserved.
