Petition richtet sich an: Abbott Diabetes Care Inc.
We call on Abbott Diabetes Care Inc. to:
- provide a permanent, open, stable, and publicly maintained documented API for access to FreeStyle Libre glucose data,
- announce planned changes to this interface in a timely and transparent manner, with sufficient lead time for developers of open-source projects such as GlucoDataHandler, xDrip+, Juggluco, AndroidAPS, or Nightscout,
- refrain from introducing technical barriers or encryption changes whose sole practical effect is to block independent third-party apps, without providing a clear and demonstrable security benefit for users,
- respect and actively promote users’ ownership and control of their data as well as interoperability, in line with the principles of the GDPR and comparable data portability regulations.
In short: Our glucose values are measured from our own bodies. We want to remain free to choose which apps we use to view, analyze, and further process this data — without this freedom of choice being unilaterally taken away from us.
Begründung
Millions of people with diabetes wear a FreeStyle Libre sensor on their body every day. Many of us do not rely solely on the official Abbott app, but also on an entire ecosystem of free and open-source applications that address gaps Abbott has not officially covered to this day: smartwatch displays, more reliable alerts, automated insulin delivery (loop systems), or the ability for parents to monitor their children’s glucose levels while they are at school.
According to current information, Abbott is planning technical changes to the data interface (LibreLinkUp API) that could result in exactly these third-party apps no longer working. This does not only affect technology enthusiasts — it particularly affects vulnerable groups:
- Children with type 1 diabetes, whose parents depend on reliable remote monitoring.
- People with impaired hypoglycemia awareness, for whom every additional alarm option can be potentially life-saving.
- People who cannot afford additional paid devices or subscriptions and therefore rely on free, community-developed projects created by volunteers.
Data security is important — but it can also be ensured through an open, documented, and secure interface, as other manufacturers have demonstrated. This petition is intended to send Abbott a clear and visible message: A broad and committed community is paying close attention and expects its freedom of choice regarding its own health data to be preserved.

I am signing this petition because the data in question is measured from my own body, and because I work in healthcare IT and see every day what happens when interfaces are closed.
The personal reason first. Which app I use to read, analyse and act on my glucose values is part of how I manage my own health. It is not a product decision for a manufacturer to make on my behalf. The open-source ecosystem around FreeStyle Libre exists precisely because it fills gaps the official app leaves open: reliable alarms, a reading on a smartwatch, parents monitoring a child at school, integration with automated insulin delivery. For people with impaired hypoglycaemia awareness those are not conveniences, they are safety functions. An encryption change or a silently broken API removes a safety net that was never Abbott's alone to take away.
The professional reason second. I work as a solution architect in a hospital. Everything in health IT is moving towards open standards and portability: HL7 FHIR, the European Health Data Space, data portability under Article 20 GDPR. The shared premise is that whoever stores health data does not get to decide who may read it. A closed sensor interface is the same lock-in problem in miniature, and every time it is accepted on a consumer device it weakens the argument for openness everywhere else.
Security is not the opposite of openness. A documented, authenticated, versioned API with a clear deprecation policy is safer than an undocumented one that people reverse-engineer anyway. Other manufacturers demonstrate this. If Abbott has genuine security concerns, the answer is a properly designed interface, not the removal of access.
What I ask for is modest: a stable, documented, publicly maintained API, changes announced with enough lead time for community developers, no technical barriers whose only real effect is to shut out third-party apps, and respect for the portability rights users already have in law.
Our bodies produce these numbers. We should decide which app is allowed to show them to us.
its important that these who are acting above us,arent real humans at all..we dont wanna live enslaved by dollar or euro and than again from same one digital slavery...or open my pruvacy for themself or anyone other ...they are makeing all of us in risk of pedos hackers and other government !@#$! who clearly works against us and our kind...
