Videoüberwachung ist kein Allheilmittel – aber sie ist nachweislich ein Ermittlungsinstrument. Laut Bundesregierung konnte die Bundespolizei im Jahr 2025 mithilfe von Videoüberwachung an Bahnhöfen 12.124 Straftaten aufklären und 9.968 Tatverdächtige ermitteln. Die Bundesregierung hebt dabei die zunehmende Bedeutung der Videoüberwachung für die Strafverfolgung hervor. Videoaufnahmen können nicht nur zur Belastung von Tatverdächtigen, sondern auch zur objektiven Rekonstruktion eines Vorfalls beitragen. Dadurch können widersprüchliche Aussagen überprüft und gegebenenfalls auch Personen entlastet werden.

Kosten-Nutzen-Verhältnis: Die Anschaffung, Wartung und datenschutzkonforme Infrastruktur hochauflösender Kamerasysteme verbrauchen erhebliche öffentliche Mittel, die alternativ in Präsenzpersonal (z. B. mehr Streifen von Bundespolizei oder DB Security) investiert werden könnten.

Kameras erfassen flächendeckend Tausende Pendler und Passanten täglich ohne jeden Anfangsverdacht. Das schafft Überwachungsdruck und ein unwohles Gefühl der dauerhaften Beobachtung im öffentlichen Raum. Eine Kamera verhindert Straftaten oder Vandalismus selten komplett. Stattdessen verlagert sich die Kriminalität meist nur wenige Meter weiter in unüberwachte Nebenstraßen, dunkle Ecken oder Wohngebiete im Lehrter Umfeld.

Keine Garantie für Prävention: Straftaten unter Alkoholeinfluss, Affekttaten oder Sachbeschädigungen geschehen oft trotz sichtbarer Kameras. Die Videoüberwachung hilft meist nur bei der nachträglichen Aufklärung, nicht aber im Moment des Geschehens.
