Petition addressed to: Bund Der Freien Waldorfschulen

We call on high school teachers to take an active stance on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. We urge them to give our students the opportunity to engage with this crisis, develop empathy, and learn civic responsibility. This is the moment to prove the anti-racist principles of the Waldorf school through concrete actions.

Reason

To the teachers of the high school classes at our schools,

I am writing to you today as a parent, deeply concerned about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and its impact on our children's moral development. What is unfolding before our eyes is a catastrophe that has been recognized as a genocide by global NGOs. This demands a clear position from us. Waldorf schools claim to be dedicated to inclusion and anti-racism. This is the moment when these principles must be proven through action.
It is crucial to make the important distinction emphasised by many Jewish organisations: Anti-Zionism is not automatically anti-Semitic. Speaking out against the genocide in Gaza is a stance in favour of human rights.
As a parent, I urgently ask you to take the following steps to actively involve our students:

  • Create a space for open dialogue: Organize an information evening to talk with students about their feelings and thoughts and respectfully moderate these sensitive debates.
  • Promote student initiatives: Ask the students themselves for ideas on how our school community can support the people in Gaza. Their creativity and compassion are a powerful force.
  • Teach essential life skills: Use this crisis as an opportunity to teach our high school students how to effectively contact decision-makers—an essential lesson in civic engagement and ethical responsibility.

Our students are in a critical phase of life where they are grappling with the "morality of the world." This challenge offers a unique chance to foster their development.
Please sign this petition to make a statement.
Teachers, sign if you are ready to show civil courage and make a difference in the future of our children and the suffering civilians of the world.
Parents, sign if you feel that teaching children about empathy, humanity, and taking action is important.

Together, we can give our children the chance to become responsible global citizens.

Thank you so much for your support, Alexia Martha Symvoulidou, Bad Aibling
