Petition addressed to: Landrat Christoph Göbel

I am requesting that the City of Munich change the current traffic light system at intersections where pedestrians and turning vehicles (especially right-turning cars) receive green lights at the same time.

Specifically, I ask the city to:

  • Implement separate signal phases for pedestrians and turning vehicles.
  • Introduce delayed green lights or dedicated turn signals to avoid conflict.
  • Prioritize safety over traffic flow, especially at busy or dangerous intersections.

These changes would reduce the risk of accidents and make crossings safer for pedestrians.

Reason

The current system puts pedestrians at risk by allowing turning vehicles to move at the same time they have a green light to cross. This creates daily conflicts, especially for children, the elderly, or people with disabilities, who may not be able to react quickly or assert themselves in front of cars.

Many drivers do not yield properly, and even cautious pedestrians feel unsafe. Relying solely on driver attention is not a safe or sustainable policy.

Safer traffic signal designs already exist and are used in other cities in Germany and Europe. Munich should be a leader in pedestrian safety and urban livability. Preventing accidents should not be optional — this change is a small step with potentially life-saving consequences.

Thank you so much for your support, Nadia Sassi, Oberschleißheim
