Zukünftige Direktverbindungen

Die Erhaltung der Strecke ergibt neue Möglichkeiten für durchgebundene Nahverkehrszüge: Wenn der ICE-Verkehr auf die Schnellstrecke verlagert wird, werden direkte Nahverkehrszüge Leipzig - Weißenfels - Jena sinnvoll. Zugleich muss nicht jeder Zug von Halle über Merseburg nach Eisenach fahren, es kann durchgehende Züge Halle - Weißenfels - Zeitz - Gera geben.
