For the retention of gender history at the University of Jena!
On 12th July 2022, the members of the faculty council of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Jena voted to not restaff the Chair for Gender History. When its current occupant, Gisela Mettele, retires in 2025, the chair will thus be dissolved indefinitely.
Our society will continue to concern itself with questions of gender, sexuality and their interwovenness with other dimensions of inequality. Gender history helps to contextualize these debates historically and to give them a scientific dimension. Gender history helps to classify these debates historically and to process them scientifically.
The elimination of the chair sends the wrong message to actors in our economy, in politics and throughout our society overall.
We demand a transparent and democratic deliberative process to reach such an important decision! We demand a public debate in which students, gender historians and academics studying gender from other perspectives will have a voice.
From the political sphere we therefore demand adequate funding for scientific gender research!
Reason
Gender history opens up historical processes by consistently applying the category of gender as a category of analysis to the particular historical object and analyzing the historically shifting cultural manifestations of gender relations, taking into account their intersectional entanglements with other dimensions of inequality.
Gender, sexuality, and other dimensions of inequality are also much debated issues in the present. The chair helps to frame these debates historically. Gender history is important here because gender issues always negotiate questions that affect the society as a whole.
We therefore need gender history as a critical and future-oriented science!

Gender studies is fundamental. I am an academic and these courses must be protected.

As a former editor of the international journal Gender & History I am surprised at this very bad decision. Issues of gender affect us all. This is a very short sighted move.

As director of my university's Women's and Gender Studies program (2007-2022) and a researcher in the history of women and gender, I see the support of gender history as crucial to a true understanding of history as well as to gender equality in all countries.
