According to current law, ...

  • motorised motorbikes with 2 or more wheels
  • trailers
  • Agricultural and forestry vehicles

carry a valid licence plate. All these vehicles can travel more than 20 kilometres per hour.

However, bicycles, whether electric or not, do not have to carry a licence plate. Although electric bicycles or pedelecs can travel up to 45 kilometres per hour.

But why?

Reason

Let's be honest. Every one of us has experienced at least one of these situations:

A cyclist behaves contrary to the Highway Code and endangers traffic or causes a traffic accident.
A cyclist behaves contrary to the Highway Code. When approached directly, they become aggressive and/or disrespectful.
A cyclist behaves disrespectfully towards pedestrians, although they are clearly in the right, for example in a pedestrian zone.
A cyclist deliberately rides through a red light and crosses traffic, thereby endangering others.
A cyclist is riding a bicycle that is not roadworthy (example: ‘racing bike’)
I'm sure you can think of other situations in which cyclists create advantages for themselves because they cannot be identified or are not checked by the police.
