Petition addressed to: Mayor Claudia Greven-Thürmer

We, the citizens’ initiative “More green in Kalk,” call on the City of Cologne and all those responsible to rebuild the school on Falckensteinstraße in Cologne-Kalk in such a way that not a single existing tree needs to be cut down and no additional areas are paved over.

We call for:

  1. the complete preservation of all existing trees on the Falckensteinstraße school grounds
  2. no additional land sealing
  3. the review and development of alternative plans that protect the existing tree population
  4. and transparent communication of the plans with residents and parents

Every tree that is cut down worsens the urban climate in Kalk—a neighborhood that is already one of the hottest and most heavily sealed-off neighborhoods in Cologne.

Reason

Why is this important?
Kalk is the district of Cologne that suffers the most from the effects of the climate crisis. In the summer, streets and paved areas heat up significantly. At the same time, there are far fewer green spaces than in Cologne’s other districts. Every tree is therefore invaluable. Trees provide shade, cool their surroundings, filter pollutants from the air, produce oxygen, store rainwater, provide habitat for animals, and improve the quality of life for everyone in the neighborhood. At schools in particular, trees offer important shaded spaces for students and teachers. They create a healthier learning environment and help reduce the ever-increasing heat stress.

What happened?
The school buildings on Falckensteinstraße are being demolished and rebuilt. We expressly welcome investments in schools and a good educational infrastructure in the Kalk district. However, new school construction and renovations must not come at the expense of the existing tree population, because this ultimately also comes at the expense of the students and residents.
The felling of 6 trees had been announced. Now a “planning error” has come to light: All 26 trees must be cut down.
We say: This is unacceptable!

School Construction and Climate Protection Go Hand in Hand
We expect the City of Cologne to adjust its plans so that all existing trees are preserved and impervious surfaces are minimized as much as possible. In times of increasing heat waves, every new building must also contribute to climate adaptation. Otherwise, while the problem of outdated school buildings may be solved, the effects of the climate catastrophe will be further intensified.
