Petition addressed to: German Federal Parliament Petitions Committee
I call for greater transparency for consumers regarding whether pesticides or other plant protection products have been used in the cultivation of food.
Specifically, consumers should be able to see whether plant protection products have been used in the production of fruit, vegetables, and ingredients in processed foods. This information should be easily accessible, for example through labeling on the packaging or via a QR code with further information.
In the case of processed foods, it should also be possible to trace whether the ingredients used come from pesticide-treated crops.
Reason
I am starting this petition because I personally experience severe physical discomfort when eating. This ranges from severe migraine-like headaches to breathing problems and other reactions. That is why it is particularly important for me to know how food has been produced and whether pesticides or other plant protection products have been used in its cultivation.
Currently, however, consumers have little opportunity to obtain this information when shopping. Due to uncertainty, I therefore often choose only organic products to avoid possible contamination. At the same time, I am aware that even in conventional farming, not every product is necessarily treated the same way—but as a consumer, I have no way of knowing this.
Many people want to make conscious decisions about what they eat—whether for health reasons, personal sensitivities, or because they want to eat more consciously in general. Transparent information about the use of pesticides would enable consumers to make informed decisions.According to the European Food Safety Authority, pesticides used in cultivation are documented and residues in food are regularly monitored. Nevertheless, information about which specific products have been used is not usually directly accessible to consumers.
Greater transparency about the use of pesticides could strengthen confidence in food production and give consumers more control over their dietary choices.
