UKW-Sende-Stationen sind offizielle Verbreitungswege für Warnungen im Bevölkerungsschutz. So kann sich z. B. im Raum Köln die Feuerwehr (ausschließlich) iin das laufende Programm von Radio Köln 107,1 einschalten. Die entsprechenden Warntöne der Sirenen bedeuten nicht umsonst: Schalten Sie Ihr UKW- Radio ein!

Sehr hohe Kosten.

UKW verursacht sehr hohe Betriebskosten – allein ARD und Deutschlandradio geben dafür rund 220 Millionen Euro (2025–2029) aus, obwohl DAB+ und IP-Streaming deutlich günstiger und energieeffizienter wären.
