Requiring English submissions for state-funded research in a German-writing country is more than strange but the argumentation of the text accompanying the petition appears to justify the use of a single language in the humanities when it claims that our mentality and even our argumentation is fundamentally influenced by language. The validity of the Sapir-Whorf (and Humboldt) hypothesis is not universally recognized and is not self-evident (especially for children of immigrants).

Deutsch war traditionnell die "Fachsprache der Romanistik" (und bleibt auch z.T. eine wichtige Sprache im Fach). Dass diese Sprache in einem deutschsprachigem Land bei wissenschaftlichen Gutachtungen auscgeschlossen sei, scheint mir unglaublich. Es geht auch nicht nur um die deutsche Sprache, sondern an allen anderen (nichtenglischen) Sprachen Europas. Als (anglophoner) Romanist kann ich nur mit der Petition einstimmen. David TROTTER

International peer-review

The FWF has implemented an international peer-review system, which is good. A proposal in German will inhibit a international peer-review system as French, Italian, British, Japanese, American reviewers will not be able to judge the German proposals. Do you really want back the German-speaking "Old-Boys" networks, where the "peer"-review by your German and Swiss colleagues (friend or enemy) will always support the same people and block others? If you are against international peer-review, only then you may support this initiative that will push back Austria into a provincial state.

pro deutsche Sprache

Englisch ist zwar die Weltsprache aber besonders in Europa ist der deutschsprachige Raum mit der größte. Warum soll dann nicht auch die deutsche Sprache in der europäischen Politik und in allen dazu notwendigen Gremien berücksichtigt werden!
