Dear Sirs and Madams,
On behalf of the students and parents of the secondary State International School Seeheim-Jugenheim (SISS) we would like to express our strong concern and opposition with regard to the dismissal of the English teacher Mr. A. .
Just recently Mr. Szartowicz (headmaster SISS secondary school) and Mr. Seffrin (Headmaster of Schuldorf Bergstrasse) dismissed Mr. A. and did not extend his contract, which echoed uproar of disbelief with students and parents alike. The fact that Mr. A. is an outstanding teacher with great pedagogical skills and empathy for the students makes this decision incomprehensible.
Herewith we would like to file a complaint as the decision cannot be rationally understood. Most importantly, we would like to see Mr. A. reinstated in his teacher position.
Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
Im Namen einer großen Anzahl von Schülern und Eltern der Sekundarstufe der State International School Seeheim-Jugenheim möchten wir unsere starke Betroffenheit und Unverständnis hinsichtlich der Entlassung den Englischlehrers Herrn A. zum Ausdruck bringen.
Erst kürzlich haben Herr Szartowicz (Schulleiter der SISS Sekundarstufe) und Herr Seffrin (Schulleiter des Schuldorfs Bergstraße) Herrn A. entlassen und somit den Zeitvertrag nicht verlängert. Dies hat ein Echo von Unglauben und Unverständnis bei Schülern wie bei Eltern ausgelöst. Vor dem Hintergrund, dass Herr A. ein hervorragender Lehrer mit außergewöhnlichen pädagogischen Fähigkeiten und Einfühlungsvermögen ist, lässt diese Entscheidung als fragwürdig erscheinen. Daher möchten wir als Schüler- und Elternschaft Herrn A. wieder in sein Lehreramt sehen.
The SISS mission statement and the International Baccalaureate state the following values and statutes (From SISS mission statement and the IB Diploma program quotes):
1. "we strive to fulfill the unique potential of each student in a supportive and challenging holistic learning environment that prepares him or her for continuing education and an active and responsible role in a multicultural world"
Mr. A.has made an incredible positive contribution to exactly support students in their educational personal development / which many students are prepared to attest.
2. "(IB) will help you to develop an International perspective and tolerance of others".
Mr. A. as British citizen and with his international profile fulfills exactly this goal and educational principle.
3. Some of the IB learner profile:
"Communicators- we express ourselves confidentially and creatively in more that one language and in many ways. We collaborate effectively, listening carefully to perspectives of other individuals and groups."
The way in which the school administration has managed the recent student and parent responses shows to the petitioners that effective collaboration, careful listening to perspectives is not sufficiently practiced.
"Principled- we act with integrity and honesty, win a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility of our actions and their consequences."
As students and parents we have a feeling and the perception that the school administration is not acting with a strong sense of fairness and justice. In fact, the rule of in-transparency creates a sense that students and parent’s feedback is not welcome and not taken seriously. For legal reasons we do not comment on the subject of integrity and honesty.
"Open-minded- we critically appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, as well as the values and traditions of others. We seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience."
Mr. A. is certainly a very direct and sometimes critical person as it relates to the management of the school. However, the petitioners feel strongly that this should be seen as added value and not a subversive.
