Dear Sirs and Madams,
On behalf of the students and parents of the secondary State International School Seeheim-Jugenheim (SISS) we would like to express our strong concern and opposition with regard to the dismissal of the English teacher Mr. A. .
Just recently Mr. Szartowicz (headmaster SISS secondary school) and Mr. Seffrin (Headmaster of Schuldorf Bergstrasse) dismissed Mr. A. and did not extend his contract, which echoed uproar of disbelief with students and parents alike. The fact that Mr. A. is an outstanding teacher with great pedagogical skills and empathy for the students makes this decision incomprehensible.
Herewith we would like to file a complaint as the decision cannot be rationally understood. Most importantly, we would like to see Mr. A. reinstated in his teacher position.
The SISS mission statement and the International Baccalaureate state the following values and statutes (From SISS mission statement and the IB Diploma program quotes):
- "we strive to fulfill the unique potential of each student in a supportive and challenging holistic learning environment that prepares him or her for continuing education and an active and responsible role in a multicultural world"
Petitioner's Comment: Mr. A.has made an incredible positive contribution to exactly support students in their educational personal development / which many students are prepared to attest.
2. "(IB) will help you to develop an International perspective and tolerance of others".
Petitioner's Comment: Mr. A. as British citizen and with his international profile fulfills exactly this goal and educational principle.
3. Some of the IB learner profile:
"Communicators- we express ourselves confidentially and creatively in more that one language and in many ways. We collaborate effectively, listening carefully to perspectives of other individuals and groups."
Petitioner's Comment: The way in which the school administration has managed the recent student and parent responses shows to the petitioners that effective collaboration, careful listening to perspectives is not sufficiently practiced.
"Principled- we act with integrity and honesty, win a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility of our actions and their consequences."
Petitioner's Comment: As students and parents we have a feeling and the perception that the school administration is not acting with a strong sense of fairness and justice. In fact, the rule of in-transparency creates a sense that students and parent’s feedback is not welcome and not taken seriously. For legal reasons we do not comment on the subject of integrity and honesty.
"Open-minded- we critically appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, as well as the values and traditions of others. We seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience."
Petitioner's Comment: Mr. A. is certainly a very direct and sometimes critical person as it relates to the management of the school. However, the petitioners feel strongly that this should be seen as added value and not a subversive.

As you might be aware there was a lot of controversy about the second petition message we sent to the Schulamt. Firstly, we would like to apologise that we did so in the name of all 317 petitioners which was not a fully true picture. Of the 317 peitioners 5 actually withdrew their support and explicitly disagreed with this approach (others might have silentlly disagreed).
Due to a legal filing against us we could not comment publicly and sooner about claims that we should have made "slanderous accusations". We did in fact make a mistake with the regard to the statement that Mr. S. was throwing a computer keyboard at students. This was corrected and legally solved and the corrected text was changed to:
"Der Schulleiter wift ein Computer-Keyboard im Chemie Unterricht mit Gewalt auf den Tisch und schreit Schüler an und verliert komplett die Kontrolle sowie verlässt das Klassenzimmer. Dazu sagt er zu den Schülern, dass diese den IGCSE-Abschluss nicht bestehen würden."
The legal representation of Mr. S. accepted this corrected version. Please understand that this mistake was not intentionally made. We tried to present facts and were not dilligent enough. We write this not to again ecalate the situation but to provide transparency that you need as petitioners.
As a result of the petition effort a group of parents came together and discussed over the past 4 weeks how to move forward constructively. We also involved Greg Morgan the scondary school PR. We have written a vision and manifesto that expresses a vision for SISS. As next step we feel that we would need a Parent Association "Parents for SISS" which is a common set up at most international school (e.g. Nelson Mandela School in Berlin - similar state driven set up as SISS).
On this coming Wedneday (28th MAy) we would like to invite parents to meeting to discuss the vision and menifesto as well as the set up of a *Parents for SISS* association. We will meet at Gasthof Brandhof, Stettbacher Tal 61, 64342 Seeheim at 7:30 pm. We would love to invite all parents that have an interest to make a difference at SISS. This is an all inclusive invitation also for parents that did not fully agree with the past approach.
We would love to see parents to get involved. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
Have a blessed week
Angela & Frank (and a dedicated group of parents in which name we act)
